Natalia Project GPS alarm Civil Rights Defenders have issued GPS bracelets that will alert the Civil Rights Defenders’ headquarters, other nearby activists, and twitter if the bracelet’s owner is ever kidnapped.

The device is being labeled the ‘Natalia Project’, in honor of Natalia Estemirova, who was abducted and found murdered for her human rights work.

The GPS alarm can be activated manually, and the lock is also designed to send out a signal if tampered with giving the wearer an added layer of security. Once activated, a signal containing the exact GPS location is sent via mobile phone network to Civil Rights Defenders headquarters in Stockholm, and also to people in the vicinity who can immediately come to the rescue.

Thousands of people will be aware of an attack within minutes of it happening. The potential of the whole world being aware of an attack instantly creates virtual protection around those at risk.

The first stage of the project is to equip 55 civil rights defenders within 18 months. Unfortunately, the CRD requires donations to help meet and go beyond this goal. Click one of the links to check out the project or to support the cause.
